What can you use Image Converter for?

Different places want different image formats: a form that only accepts JPG, a design tool that wants PNG, a website that loads faster with WebP. This converter re-encodes an image into the format you choose and shows the new file size before you download it.

Formats are not interchangeable. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which suits logos, screenshots and graphics. JPG is lossy and has no transparency, which suits photos. WebP can do either and is usually smaller than both. Picking the right one is a trade-off between file size, quality and where the image will be used, so the converter shows the result before you commit.

  • Turning a WebP image that a site saved into a JPG or PNG that older software opens.
  • Converting a PNG screenshot to JPG or WebP so it is much smaller to send or upload.
  • Saving a JPG logo as PNG before you edit it or place it on a coloured background.
  • Preparing WebP versions of images for a website.

Tips for better results

  • Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail the JPG already lost. The file usually gets larger, not better.
  • Use PNG for graphics with sharp edges or transparency, and JPG or WebP for photos.
  • Converting to JPG replaces transparent areas with a solid colour, so pick one that suits where the image will go.
  • After converting, run the file through the Image Compressor if you need it smaller still.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Image Converter upload my images?

No. The image is converted in your browser using a canvas and never leaves your device.

Which formats can I convert between?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP and most other images your browser can display, and save as PNG, JPG or WebP. WebP output depends on your browser, so the option is hidden where it is not supported. An animated GIF is converted as a single still frame.

Will converting reduce the image quality?

Saving as PNG is lossless. Saving as JPG or WebP is lossy, so the quality slider decides how much detail is traded for a smaller file. Around 80–90% is usually hard to tell from the original.

What happens to transparency?

PNG and WebP keep it. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).

Why did my file get bigger after converting?

Lossless PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a photo saved as PNG is often several times larger than the JPG it came from. Choose JPG or WebP for photos.

Does it keep the image dimensions and metadata?

The width and height stay the same. Metadata such as EXIF camera details and GPS location is not carried over, because the image is redrawn on a canvas.
